Veteran Gardens Project
The purpose of Veteran Gardens is to help Homeless Veterans with food and shelter needs so they can find a way to a productive life.
In North-East Wisconsin corporate farmers are buying many of the older family farms but are leaving the houses and outbuildings along with 10 to 20 acres of land.
Friends of Veterans would like to purchase one of these farmettes, bring in 4 to 5 homeless veterans into the house with the understanding they help work the gardens for their room and board. Speaking with an agent of the UW extension office, a well kept commercial vegetable garden can yield $5,000 to $6,000 per acre a year. With this example the Veteran Gardens project will be self-supporting.
If this model is successful, we will continue with the next farmette.
